Tulsi Gabbard has announced her resignation as the United States Director of National Intelligence, marking a major leadership change in the US intelligence system. The Tulsi Gabbard resignation will take effect on June 30 and comes during a period of ongoing global security tensions and policy shifts within the administration.

Gabbard said she is stepping down due to her husband’s serious health condition. In her resignation letter, she explained that her husband has been diagnosed with bone cancer and requires her full support during his treatment.

She wrote that her husband’s strength and love have supported her through every stage of her career. She said she could not continue in a demanding national security role while her family is facing a major medical crisis.

Tulsi Gabbard was confirmed as Director of National Intelligence after the return of President Donald Trump to the White House in 2025. She was one of the most senior figures responsible for coordinating US intelligence agencies and advising the president on national security matters.

The White House confirmed that Deputy Director Aaron Lukas will serve as acting intelligence chief after her departure. Officials said the transition process is already underway to ensure continuity in intelligence operations.

President Donald Trump publicly thanked Gabbard for her service. He said she had done an excellent job and that her leadership would be missed within the administration.

Gabbard’s resignation makes her the fourth cabinet level departure in Trump’s second administration. Earlier exits included senior officials from labor, homeland security, and justice roles, reflecting continued changes within the government team.

Throughout her tenure, Gabbard maintained a relatively low public profile even as the United States was involved in major foreign policy decisions. These included military actions in the Middle East and rising tensions involving Iran.

Her position on foreign intervention often drew attention. She had previously been known for opposing long foreign military conflicts and advocating a more restrained US foreign policy approach.

During internal policy debates, Gabbard faced scrutiny over intelligence assessments related to Iran. She was questioned about differences between intelligence community findings and administration statements on nuclear enrichment concerns.

Her resignation letter highlighted the personal nature of her decision, focusing entirely on her husband’s health condition and family responsibilities. She said the coming months would require her full attention at home.

Donald Trump said he believed Gabbard’s husband would recover and praised her decision to prioritize family. He said the administration respected her choice to step away from public service.

Gabbard’s political career has included several major milestones. She became one of the youngest lawmakers elected in Hawaii when she entered state politics at age 21. She later served in the US Congress representing Hawaii.

She gained national attention for her independent political stance and later served as a presidential candidate in 2020. Her policy positions often focused on foreign policy restraint and criticism of long military interventions.

In later years, she left the Democratic Party and became an independent before aligning with Republican politics. She later supported Trump during the 2024 election and joined his transition team after his victory.

As Director of National Intelligence, Gabbard oversaw coordination between multiple intelligence agencies. She also worked on restructuring efforts aimed at reducing bureaucracy and improving efficiency within the intelligence community.

Her departure leaves a key leadership position open at a time of global uncertainty. Intelligence coordination plays a central role in shaping US responses to international security challenges.

Officials said the administration will announce further details on long term succession plans soon. For now, acting leadership will manage ongoing intelligence operations until a permanent replacement is named.
