Residents in Wolverhampton will soon have the opportunity to help shape a major city centre regeneration project as developers launch a public consultation on plans for the St George’s area.
The consultation will take place on Thursday, 16 July, giving residents, businesses, and community groups their first chance to view the proposed redevelopment and share their opinions before a planning application is submitted.
The event will be held at Lupo Lounge from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm BST. Organizers say feedback collected during the consultation will help refine the plans before they move to the next stage.
The project focuses on the St George’s area, which has remained largely unused for several years. Developers aim to transform the site into a vibrant new neighborhood while preserving its historic character.
Under the proposals, the Grade II-listed St George’s Church will remain at the centre of the development. The surrounding land, including the former Sainsbury’s supermarket site, will be redeveloped to include around 370 new homes, a food hall, modern workplaces, public spaces, and improved community facilities.
The project is designed to create a lively destination that attracts visitors throughout the day and into the evening. Plans include areas where people can enjoy cafés, restaurants, shopping, and community events alongside new housing.
Developers believe the project will bring new life to an important part of the city centre while supporting economic growth and creating a stronger sense of community.
Martin Crews, representing developer Capital&Centric, said the St George’s site has remained empty for too long and now offers a valuable opportunity for redevelopment. He said local residents have an important role in shaping the project because they understand the area better than anyone else.
City of Wolverhampton Council is encouraging as many people as possible to attend the consultation and provide feedback. Council officials said the event will allow the public to review the emerging vision for the site and influence how the development progresses.
Council Leader Stephen Simkins said the redevelopment offers an opportunity to deliver much-needed housing while also creating attractive public spaces, shops, and community facilities. He said the project has the potential to improve the quality of life for local residents and strengthen the city centre.
Simkins also expressed confidence in the developer’s experience, saying the company has a strong record of delivering successful regeneration projects. He believes the scheme could become a transformational addition to Wolverhampton.
The public consultation will remain open until 3 August, allowing residents additional time to review the proposals and submit comments after the launch event.
Following the consultation process, developers expect to prepare a formal planning application by the end of the year. If approved, the redevelopment would become one of the largest regeneration projects currently planned for Wolverhampton city centre.
The proposed development reflects a wider effort to increase housing, improve public spaces, and encourage investment in the city. Officials hope the project will attract new residents, businesses, and visitors while protecting the area’s historic landmarks.
As planning moves forward, public feedback is expected to play an important role in shaping the final design. The Wolverhampton City Redevelopment project aims to create a modern, mixed-use neighborhood that combines new homes, employment opportunities, leisure facilities, and preserved heritage at the heart of the city.
