Central Park carriage accident has left an 18 year old dead after a runaway horse caused a violent crash in one of New York City’s most visited parks. The incident happened on Wednesday afternoon and involved a horse-drawn carriage that lost control before striking another carriage near Tavern on the Green.
Central Park became the scene of the fatal accident after a horse suddenly bolted while pulling a carriage carrying a family group. Police said the driver was unable to regain control as the horse ran through the park at high speed.
According to the New York Police Department, the horse eventually collided with another carriage near West 67th Street. The impact was strong enough to tip the carriage onto its side, throwing the 18 year old passenger onto the ground. He hit his head on the pavement and suffered critical injuries.
Emergency services rushed the young man to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Authorities confirmed that other passengers in the carriage, including family members, suffered only minor injuries.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene following the crash. Cellphone footage captured the moment of impact, showing the carriage overturning after the collision. Other carriage workers and bystanders rushed to help immediately after the accident.
One carriage worker, Christina Hansen, said she arrived quickly after receiving a call about the incident. She checked on the horse and secured it to a nearby pole. She said the animal appeared unharmed after the crash.
She also said she spoke with the carriage driver, who was visibly shaken after the horse ran off. Early reports suggest the horse may have bolted while the driver was momentarily away from full control of the reins, though the exact cause is still under investigation.
The Transport Workers Union, which represents workers in the carriage industry, called for a full investigation into the incident. A union representative said the horse had only recently begun working in the park and questioned whether proper procedures were followed at the time of the accident.
The union also stressed that drivers are not supposed to leave their carriages unattended, even briefly, as horses can become unpredictable in busy park environments.
The accident has renewed debate over the future of horse-drawn carriages in Central Park. City officials and animal welfare groups have long argued about safety concerns and animal welfare risks linked to the industry.
Zohran Mamdani said his office had been briefed on the incident and called for an end to horse carriage operations in city parks. He described the tragedy as preventable and urged lawmakers to reconsider existing rules.
The Central Park Conservancy also issued a strong statement following the fatal crash. It said the death highlighted ongoing safety concerns and supported efforts to ban horse carriages in the park. The organization said the park should not carry risks linked to an outdated system operating in a heavily used public space.
The incident comes shortly after another horse in the park reportedly died after ingesting a toxic plant, adding to growing concerns about animal safety and working conditions in the carriage industry.
Lawmakers are currently reviewing proposals such as Ryder’s Law, which would gradually phase out horse-drawn carriages in New York City. Supporters say the recent incidents strengthen the case for reform.
Authorities continue to investigate the exact cause of the runaway horse and the sequence of events leading to the crash. Officials say more details will be released as the investigation continues.
