President Donald Trump voiced support for Irish reunification during a visit to Ireland on Saturday, saying he would welcome the idea of a united Ireland and believes it could happen in the years ahead.

Trump made the remarks during a meeting with Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin. His comments quickly became a major topic because the future of Northern Ireland remains one of the most sensitive political issues in the region.

When asked about reunification, Trump first noted that he did not want to create controversy. He then shared his personal view on the matter.

“I’d love to see it unified,” Trump said.

The question of Irish reunification has divided opinion for decades. Northern Ireland is currently part of the United Kingdom, while the Republic of Ireland is an independent nation. Unionist parties want Northern Ireland to remain in the UK. Nationalist parties support the idea of joining the Republic of Ireland.

The issue is tied to a long and difficult history. For nearly 30 years, Northern Ireland experienced violence and unrest during a period known as the Troubles. The conflict involved political groups, security forces, and local communities. Thousands of people were killed, and many more were injured.

A peace process led to the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. The agreement helped end most of the violence and created a framework for political cooperation. It also established the legal path for any future reunification vote.

Under the agreement, Irish reunification can only take place if majorities in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland approve it through separate referendums. Because of these rules, international leaders have often avoided taking a direct public position on the issue.

Trump took a different approach. During the meeting, he suggested that reunification could eventually become a reality.

“It’s going to happen eventually,” Trump said. He added that he believed Ireland’s leadership could help move discussions forward.

The US president also said that any future change would require consideration of the United Kingdom’s position. Even so, he described reunification as something positive.

“I think it would be a fantastic thing,” Trump said.

His remarks drew swift reactions from political leaders. Officials in the United Kingdom stressed that Northern Ireland’s constitutional future remains a matter for its people and must follow the Good Friday Agreement.

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham had recently stated that a border poll was not currently on the political agenda. He also reaffirmed support for the peace agreement that governs any future decision on the issue.

In Northern Ireland, Democratic Unionist Party leader Gavin Robinson responded by saying that decisions about the region’s future should be made by local voters.

Robinson said Northern Ireland’s status would be determined by the people who live there rather than by comments from leaders in other countries.

Trump arrived in Ireland earlier on Saturday for meetings with government officials and business leaders. His visit included talks on economic cooperation, trade opportunities, and international affairs.

At an arrival ceremony, Trump was welcomed by Irish President Catherine Connolly. The event featured performances of both the American and Irish national anthems. Trump later exchanged greetings with Irish officials before beginning his scheduled meetings.

During a brief conversation with reporters, Trump also addressed international developments. Asked about issues affecting global trade routes, he expressed confidence that current challenges would be resolved.

“Everything will work out just fine,” Trump said.

The visit comes during an important period for the White House. The United States is preparing for midterm elections, while international tensions continue to demand attention from American policymakers.

Security arrangements were extensive during Trump’s stay. Irish authorities limited access to several areas in Dublin as official meetings took place. The president traveled between government residences and attended discussions focused on strengthening ties between the United States and Ireland.

While trade and diplomacy formed a key part of the agenda, Trump’s comments on Irish reunification dominated headlines. His remarks revived debate over a question that remains central to politics on both sides of the Irish border and may continue to shape discussions for years to come.
