A Los Angeles County court has granted a temporary restraining order to pop star Sabrina Carpenter after she alleged that a man repeatedly stalked her and attempted to enter her home.
The order was issued on Monday and requires 31-year-old William Applegate to remain at least 100 yards away from Carpenter, her sister Sarah Carpenter, and Sarah’s partner, who also live at the property in the Hollywood Hills.
Court records show that Carpenter filed a request for a civil harassment restraining order on Friday. In her filing, she alleged that Applegate engaged in stalking behavior that escalated over several weeks and eventually led to an attempt to enter her residence.
According to the court documents, Carpenter said the man came to her front door on May 23 and tried to force it open. She stated that the incident caused serious concern for her safety and increased fears about his behavior.
In a written declaration submitted to the court, Carpenter said the alleged stalking had caused ongoing emotional distress. She wrote that she feared what could happen if legal protections were not put in place.
The temporary restraining order prohibits Applegate from contacting, harassing, threatening, intimidating, or stalking Carpenter. The order also extends protection to her workplace and vehicle.
Authorities said the incident on May 23 became more serious when a security guard confronted the man outside the home. According to a declaration submitted by a Los Angeles police detective, Applegate allegedly struck the security guard after being challenged.
Evidence presented in court included images from a home security camera system. The photographs reportedly showed a man identified as Applegate standing near Carpenter’s front door before being approached by security personnel.
Court filings state that the security guard instructed the man to leave the property. However, he allegedly refused and claimed that he knew Carpenter and that she was expecting him at the residence.
The documents describe that claim as completely false. Carpenter stated that she had no relationship with the man and had never invited him to her home.
According to investigators, Applegate remained near the property until police officers arrived. He was later arrested on suspicion of trespassing, a misdemeanor offense under California law.
The allegations did not end with that arrest. Carpenter told the court that the man returned to the neighborhood during the following two days.
She alleged that he parked his vehicle nearby and positioned himself in a way that made it difficult for others to notice him. According to her declaration, he reclined the seat inside his car and remained in the area for extended periods.
Carpenter described the behavior as deliberate surveillance and harassment. She said the man would leave only after police officers responded to reports of his presence.
Members of Carpenter’s security team later reviewed activity in the neighborhood and reportedly concluded that the man had been visiting the area since around April 20. According to court documents, he gradually moved closer to the singer’s home over time.
The filing claims that his actions showed an increasing fixation on Carpenter. In her declaration, the singer expressed concern that the alleged behavior reflected an irrational belief that he knew her personally.
Carpenter is one of the most successful pop artists of recent years. She has built a large international fan base through her music, acting career, and live performances. Like many high-profile entertainers, she maintains private security measures to protect her home and personal safety.
Legal experts note that restraining orders are often used in stalking cases to provide immediate protection while authorities continue to investigate allegations. Temporary orders can later be reviewed by a judge and may be extended depending on the evidence presented.
The Los Angeles Police Department has submitted its investigation to city prosecutors for review. Authorities are considering possible charges related to trespassing and other allegations connected to the May 23 incident.
A separate court hearing connected to the matter is scheduled for June 18. At that hearing, officials are expected to review the case and determine what further legal action may be appropriate.
For now, the temporary restraining order remains in effect, providing legal protection for Carpenter and her family members while the investigation continues. The case highlights the security challenges that public figures can face when dealing with alleged stalking and unwanted attention.
