Don Nelson, one of the most successful coaches in NBA history, died on Sunday at an assisted living facility in Frisco, Texas. He was 86.

Nelson’s death came after his health worsened in recent weeks. His granddaughter, Christie Nelson Armstrong, said he suffered a stroke about three weeks before his death.

His passing ends a basketball career that lasted almost 50 years. Nelson worked in the NBA as both a player and coach. He became known for his long service, strong ideas and deep impact on the game.

Nelson was not viewed as a likely NBA star when he began his playing career. He was an undersized small forward. He was also not known for great speed or athletic skill.

He was waived by NBA teams twice before joining the Boston Celtics in 1965. That move changed his career.

Nelson became an important part of the Celtics team. Boston was one of the strongest teams in the league during his time there.

He won five NBA championships as a player with the Celtics. He often came off the bench and gave the team a strong lift. His jump shot was one of his main strengths.

Nelson’s best-known playing moment came in the 1969 NBA Finals. He made a key basket against the Los Angeles Lakers. The shot became a lasting part of his playing story.

His biggest impact, however, came after he stopped playing.

Nelson became an NBA head coach and spent 31 years in that role. He coached the Milwaukee Bucks, Golden State Warriors and Dallas Mavericks. He also had a short coaching run with the New York Knicks.

Over time, Nelson became known as an inventive coach. He did not always follow the usual ideas about how teams should play.

He liked to use speed, space and shooting. He also found new roles for players and used smaller lineups when he felt they gave his teams an edge.

His style was often called unusual during his coaching years. Some of his ideas later became much more common across the NBA.

Nelson had a major role in the development of the Golden State Warriors. His teams showed how smaller players could create problems for larger opponents.

His coaching success placed him among the winningest coaches in NBA history. He was later inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.

In his later years, Nelson lived away from the daily pressure of the NBA. His final period was far quieter than the decades he spent around professional basketball.

His health became a serious concern after the stroke in July. His condition declined before his death, according to his granddaughter.

Nelson’s passing closes a career that connected several eras of the NBA. He played in the Celtics dynasty and later coached teams during major changes in the sport.

Few coaches had the chance to see such a long period of NBA history from the court and the bench.

His story also stands out because of how his career began. Nelson was twice cut by NBA teams. He later became a five-time champion as a player and one of the league’s most successful coaches.

His career was built on patience and fresh ideas. He found ways to succeed even when his size and style caused doubts.

Nelson leaves behind a record that reaches far beyond wins. His five NBA titles as a player remain part of his legacy. His coaching career added another major chapter.

His death marks the end of a long life in basketball. Yet his influence will remain in the way coaches use space, speed and different player roles.

Don Nelson spent nearly five decades in the NBA. His final years were quiet, but his place in basketball history is lasting.
