Trump’s Urgent Push for a Ukraine Peace Deal Raises Alarm in Kyiv

Zelensky Maintains a Careful and Measured Stance
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky avoids criticising the US draft peace plan, even though it reflects key Russian demands. The White House denies claims that Ukraine was excluded from the drafting process. Zelensky says in his nightly address that Ukraine wants peace and will pursue calm and disciplined diplomacy. He stresses that Ukraine remains ready for honest and efficient talks.

    Kyiv Worries About Risky Concessions
Kyiv fears proposals that include giving up the entire Donbas region. The draft also calls for a smaller Ukrainian army and bans foreign troops on Ukrainian soil. Ukraine has rejected such demands in the past. MP Yaroslav Yurchyshyn tells the Kyiv Independent that Washington seeks quick peace at the expense of the weaker side.

Ukraine Faces Increasing Military and Political Pressure
Russia continues to advance in the east and increases pressure along the front line. Long-range strikes on the energy grid trigger widespread blackouts. Corruption allegations fuel political infighting and distract from the war effort. Officials in Washington and Moscow are closely monitoring these developments.

US Officials Stress the Need for Difficult Decisions
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says both sides must accept painful choices. The published draft promises reliable security guarantees for Ukraine. It appears to propose using frozen Russian assets to support reconstruction. The plan blocks Ukraine’s Nato membership but leaves open a path to the European Union.

Europe Pushes for Greater Influence in the Talks
European countries had limited input on the draft. Plans from London and Paris for an international reassurance force do not appear in the document. The draft rejects any foreign troops. European partners demand a stronger voice. Their pressure could help Zelensky adjust the proposals.

Washington Moves Forward With a Tight Timeline
US officials push the plan under strict deadlines. President Donald Trump has approved the draft and expects progress within weeks. A US delegation prepares to travel to Moscow soon. Hopes for direct talks between Vladimir Putin and Zelensky appear to have faded.

Trump Shows Growing Signs of Impatience
Trump often claims he can end the war quickly. His patience now appears limited. He urges both sides to sign the deal without delay.
