Sir David Attenborough’s new BBC series Kingdom captures extraordinary moments of animal behaviour, including a lion rescuing a pregnant hyena from wild dogs.

Filmed over five years in Zambia’s Luangwa Valley, the series follows four rival carnivore families — lions, hyenas, leopards, and wild dogs — revealing rare insights into survival and rivalry.

Executive producer Mike Gunton said: “We could never have written a script like this — only nature could.” Among the highlights are a wild dog escaping a crocodile and a hyena hiding a stolen carcass underwater.

The series also tackles human impacts such as habitat loss and snare traps. Scientific consultant Dr Matthew Becker said the footage provides vital conservation data, adding: “We got information we’d never have been able to get otherwise.”

Despite showing the threats these animals face, producer Felicity Lanchester said the message is one of “optimism in the face of challenge.”
