Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is facing growing questions about his political future as his time in office approaches its end. His comments about the Republican Party’s poor midterm performance have sparked fresh talk about a possible presidential campaign in 2028.

DeSantis recently told CNN that he would become a “free man after Jan. 5.” The remark referred to the end of his two terms as Florida governor. However, his plans after leaving office remain unclear. His strong criticism of his own party has led some conservatives to view him as a possible leading candidate for the next presidential race.

Republicans in Florida managed to avoid the large Democratic gains seen in several other Republican-led states. Texas was among the states hit by the Democratic wave. Florida’s result has helped strengthen arguments that DeSantis could have a national role in rebuilding the Republican Party.

Conservative radio host Jenna Ellis believes the moment could work in DeSantis’ favor. Ellis, who served as a legal adviser to Donald Trump’s 2020 campaign, said the governor had delivered important policy results. She also argued that Republican voters had shown they wanted strong leadership rather than a political personality cult.

Ellis described DeSantis as a figure who stands between the MAGA movement and the traditional Republican establishment. She said he had shown a willingness to criticize both sides while maintaining his political principles.

Blaise Ingoglia, a former Florida Republican Party chairman who narrowly won the race for state chief financial officer, also praised the governor. He said it was no surprise that discussions about DeSantis’ presidential future had returned. Ingoglia argued that the governor helped create the conditions that allowed Florida Republicans to resist the Democratic gains.

A person close to DeSantis said the midterm results had created a major opportunity for him in 2028. The person spoke anonymously and said the political opening was clear, even if few people were discussing it openly. The same person also described DeSantis as highly qualified for a possible Supreme Court position if a vacancy became available.

However, DeSantis has pushed back against reports that he has started preparing another presidential campaign. On Friday night, The Washington Post reported that he had contacted a political consultant about possible campaign work.

The governor strongly rejected the report in a post on X. He said the newspaper had made up the story and insisted that he had not contacted anyone about running for public office.

DeSantis became a national Republican figure during the Covid-19 pandemic. He opposed many restrictions introduced by other states and gained support from conservatives who wanted fewer government limits. He later became involved in major political fights over race, education, and gender identity.

Before the 2024 presidential election, many Republicans viewed him as a strong alternative to Trump. Supporters saw him as a more disciplined political figure who could deliver conservative policies without the personal disputes often linked to Trump.

His campaign raised a large amount of money but struggled to gain enough support. It ended after the Iowa caucuses, following repeated attacks from Trump and his political allies.

During his time as governor, DeSantis also gained attention for sending migrants to Martha’s Vineyard and taking legal action against Walt Disney World. His fight with Disney followed the company’s opposition to a Florida law on classroom discussions of sexual orientation and gender identity.

He also helped strengthen Republican control of Florida. Under his leadership, the party gained a major advantage in voter registration, with about 1.5 million more registered Republicans than Democrats.

However, his final years in Tallahassee have brought several political challenges. DeSantis faced growing disagreements with Republican lawmakers in the state House. Some lawmakers were less willing to support his policy plans.

He also faced criticism over his decision to remain outside the Florida governor’s race until after the Republican primary was won by Representative Byron Donalds. Republicans also lost several seats in the state Legislature during the midterms. The losses ended the party’s supermajority under DeSantis.

As his term comes to an end, the governor is also preparing for life outside public office. Reports say he is buying a home in Polk County. A Florida Republican operative said DeSantis would likely remain active in national political debates.

Another Republican consultant said the governor planned to continue speaking at public events and keep his options open for 2028. However, the consultant suggested that a presidential campaign in 2032 might be more likely.

DeSantis has also formed a think tank that could help him develop policy ideas and influence the future direction of the Republican Party. His long-term goals include support for a balanced budget amendment and term limits for elected officials.

Some allies have discussed the possibility of DeSantis joining Trump’s administration. However, several Republican consultants said he would have little interest in such a move. The departure of Susie Wiles as White House chief of staff has also changed the political situation. Trump announced that Stephen Miller would replace her on Friday.

Trump has not endorsed a possible successor for the 2028 Republican presidential race. Speaking to Fox News, he said the party had several talented people who could become strong candidates.

For now, DeSantis has avoided giving a clear answer about his political plans. During television interviews after the midterms, he repeatedly declined to confirm whether he would run for president again. He did, however, leave the possibility open.

His next move remains uncertain, but his criticism of Republican leaders and Florida’s election results have placed him back in the national political discussion.
