Donald Trump has chosen Stephen Miller, one of his closest political advisers, to become the new White House chief of staff. The decision follows a major defeat for Republicans in the midterm elections and could signal a tougher approach toward the newly strengthened Democratic Party.
Trump announced the appointment on Friday. Miller will take over from Susie Wiles, who played a key role in his successful 2024 election campaign and later became one of the most influential figures in his administration.
The change comes at a time when Trump faces a more difficult political situation. Republicans suffered heavy losses in Tuesday’s midterm vote, giving Democrats greater power in Congress. After the result, Trump said he was willing to work with the opposition. Yet his decision to promote Miller has raised doubts about how far he intends to pursue cooperation.
Miller has a long record of supporting Trump’s political agenda. He is known for his strong views on immigration, national security and the use of federal power. His appointment may give a leading voice to those who favour a more aggressive response to political challenges.
In a message on X, Miller said he was deeply honoured by the president’s choice. He also said the task ahead was clearer than ever and called for full support for Trump and the country.
Trump also spoke warmly about his adviser. Speaking to reporters after announcing the decision on Truth Social, he said Miller had been with him since the beginning of his political career. He added that Miller understood his aims and approach.
The chief of staff is one of the most important officials in the US government. The role involves managing the White House, controlling access to the president and helping decide which policies receive attention. The chief of staff also works with members of Congress and outside groups to build support for the president’s plans.
Miller is best known for helping shape the administration’s strict immigration policies. He has supported wider deportation operations and increased funding for federal agencies responsible for enforcing immigration laws.
His role in immigration policy has also brought him into several public disputes. One major controversy followed the killing of Alex Pretti by federal immigration officials during a large enforcement operation in Minneapolis.
Miller initially called Pretti a domestic terrorist and an assassin. He later changed his position and said federal agents may not have followed the correct procedures. The comments drew attention to his influence over the administration’s response to controversial enforcement actions.
Miller has also reportedly had an important role in US military operations in Venezuela and actions against suspected drug trafficking groups in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific. Critics have questioned the legal basis for some of these operations and condemned deaths linked to them.
His political partnership with Trump began during the 2016 presidential campaign. Miller joined the campaign as a strategist and became a regular speaker at rallies. His speeches often used strong language to attack Trump’s opponents and promote the campaign’s main themes.
He remained one of the few senior officials to serve throughout Trump’s first term. Even after Trump lost the 2020 election and failed to overturn the result, Miller continued to support him. He later returned to the White House as deputy chief of staff for policy when Trump began his second term.
Wiles had a different reputation inside the administration. As a manager of Trump’s 2024 campaign, she was seen as a calm and organised figure. She helped maintain stability and avoided many of the public disputes and staff conflicts that affected Trump’s first presidency.
However, reports indicate that Trump’s relationship with Wiles became more difficult in recent months. His declining political standing and the Republican election losses added pressure to her position.
Trump was also reportedly unhappy with media reports suggesting that people close to Wiles had secured high-paying consulting work through their links to the president.
Miller’s promotion marks a major shift in the White House leadership. His close relationship with Trump and his strong political approach may influence how the administration deals with Congress. With Democrats now holding greater political power, the new chief of staff could face a difficult task balancing Trump’s agenda with growing pressure from the opposition.
