A U.S. Air Force officer has shared new details about surviving after his fighter jet was shot down over Iran earlier this year. The dramatic account was revealed during an interview broadcast on national television on Sunday.
The officer, identified only by the mission call sign “Bravo,” described the life-threatening events that followed the destruction of his aircraft on April 2.
According to the interview, Bravo was serving as the weapons systems officer aboard an F-15E fighter jet when the aircraft was struck by a shoulder-fired missile over Iran. The attack forced both crew members to eject from the aircraft.
For security reasons, the U.S. military has not publicly released Bravo’s identity. The television program said it agreed to use only his call sign because of ongoing threats linked to the Iranian government.
Bravo recalled the moment the missile hit the aircraft. He said the impact felt like being struck by a freight train.
The pilot, identified only as “Alpha,” immediately activated the ejection system. Bravo credited his fellow officer with saving both of their lives.
“I will be thankful to my dying day,” Bravo said, praising Alpha’s quick actions during the emergency.
After ejecting, Bravo found himself falling toward a remote mountainous area. As he looked up, he noticed that his parachute had suffered damage during the missile strike.
He described seeing the damaged parachute as the most frightening moment of the entire ordeal.
Military experts later estimated that Bravo struck the ground at a speed between 70 and 100 miles per hour. Despite the severe impact, he survived.
Bravo called his survival a miracle.
The crash landing left him with serious injuries. According to the report, he suffered a broken back, a broken arm, and a shoulder injury.
Even with those injuries, Bravo knew he had to keep moving. He feared being captured while stranded deep inside hostile territory.
The officer began a difficult journey through the rugged landscape. He climbed and hiked across a ridgeline that rose roughly 7,000 feet above the surrounding terrain.
The effort required him to push through intense pain while trying to remain hidden.
For two days, Bravo remained behind enemy lines. During that time, he had no food and no water. He relied on training, determination, and hope while waiting for help to arrive.
Eventually, a rescue mission was launched.
Two highly trained Air Force pararescue specialists reached Bravo and guided him to safety. The operation ended his dangerous ordeal after nearly 48 hours in hostile territory.
When the rescuers arrived, Bravo said he was ready to leave immediately.
“Let’s go,” he told them.
The report described the rescue mission as one of the most difficult and dangerous operations conducted in recent U.S. military history.
The interview focused on Bravo’s experience and did not include comments from Alpha. Reports indicated that Alpha landed about five miles away after the pair ejected from the aircraft.
