The attacks involved four hijacked commercial airplanes. Two planes struck the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, leading to their collapse. A third plane hit the Pentagon near Washington, DC, while a fourth crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers and crew fought back against the hijackers.

President Donald Trump remained in the Washington area to participate in a ceremony at the Pentagon. The site was one of the three major locations targeted during the attacks. A total of 184 people died when American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon on September 11, 2001.
Trump chose not to attend the memorial event at the World Trade Center in New York City. Instead, Vice President JD Vance represented the administration at the New York ceremony, where political speeches are traditionally not permitted.
During his address at the Pentagon, Trump described the attacks as an act of evil and pledged that the victims would never be forgotten.
“We will honour their lives, we will cherish their beautiful memories, and we will protect this country and its freedoms for every future generation,” Trump said.
The president also praised members of the military and linked the anniversary to present-day security challenges. He said the United States must remain committed to defending itself against threats.
Trump further highlighted his administration’s position on Iran, stating that the country should never be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon. He connected that policy to broader efforts aimed at combating terrorism and protecting American interests.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also addressed the ceremony at the Pentagon. Speaking before the president, Hegseth urged Americans to remain alert to security threats both at home and abroad.
He said the lessons of September 11 remain relevant today and stressed the importance of continued vigilance.
“There are still enemies who hate us,” Hegseth told attendees. He warned that terrorist threats continue to exist and argued that the United States must stay prepared to respond to them.
The defense secretary also discussed ongoing military operations and national security efforts. He referred to the administration’s actions against Iran and described them as part of a broader strategy aimed at reducing threats to the United States and its allies.
Hegseth said the country must remain focused on preventing future attacks and protecting national security interests around the world.
While the Pentagon ceremony included remarks about current geopolitical challenges, many commemorations across the country centered on remembrance rather than politics.
At memorial sites, families gathered to honor loved ones who died in the attacks. Survivors, rescue workers, and community members participated in moments of silence and ceremonies designed to preserve the memory of those lost.
