A man has been charged with murder in the stabbing death of actor James Handy in Los Angeles, officials confirmed on Friday.

The case involves Michael Gledhill, the son of Handy’s girlfriend, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. He is accused of murder with a special allegation that he used a deadly weapon. Prosecutors say he could face up to 26 years in prison if convicted. The investigation is still ongoing as authorities review the case.

James Handy, 81, was found stabbed outside his girlfriend’s home in the Tarzana neighborhood of Los Angeles on Wednesday morning. Police said they responded after a 911 call reported a disturbing message from inside the home. The caller allegedly said, “I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin,” according to officials. Michael Gledhill later flagged down officers and told them he was the person they were looking for. He was taken into custody without further incident.

He is currently being held on $2 million bail, according to jail records. Court records show he had an arraignment scheduled on Friday, where defendants typically enter a not guilty plea. A public defender was listed in records, though the specific plea was not detailed. The charge includes a special allegation of using a deadly weapon, which could increase sentencing if convicted. He remains in custody as proceedings continue. Further hearings are expected as the case moves forward.

James Handy was an 81-year-old actor with roles in film and television, including as bartender Jimmy in Top Gun Maverick. His death has drawn shock from colleagues and people who worked with him over the years. The district attorney said the case reflects a deeply tragic end, emphasizing the violence of the incident. Michael Gledhill’s mother expressed sorrow, saying she loved James and that the tragedy should never have happened. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the stabbing. No motive has been officially confirmed.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said it has filed a murder charge and is seeking accountability in the case. Officials say the special allegation of a deadly weapon may allow for a longer sentence if the defendant is convicted at trial. Bail was set at 2 million dollars, reflecting the seriousness of the charge and the court’s assessment of risk. Legal experts note that arraignments typically involve formal reading of charges and an initial plea entry, often not guilty. In this case, court documents did not confirm the exact plea entered during the early proceedings. The process will continue through additional hearings where evidence and arguments are expected to be presented.

Friends and colleagues across the entertainment industry described James Handy as a seasoned actor with a long career in film and television. His work included supporting roles in well-known productions, and he remained active in the industry for many years. The sudden nature of his death has led to widespread attention and concern in the local community of Los Angeles. Authorities have not released a confirmed motive, and investigators are still reviewing evidence from the scene. The case remains under active investigation as police and prosecutors continue to gather information. Court proceedings are expected to continue in the coming weeks as the legal process advances.

Officials emphasized that climbing and rescue work on Denali and similar peaks carries significant risks even for highly trained professionals. The National Park Service said Pendery had been part of mountain operations focused on safety, emergency response, and guiding climbers. Her colleagues said she was respected for her skill, dedication, and calm approach in difficult situations. The investigation into how the fall occurred continues, with no final conclusions released yet. Authorities have said more details may be released once the review process is complete. The community continues to mourn her loss as the climbing season progresses on the mountain. Officials reiterated safety reminders for all teams working at high altitude. Investigation continues.
