Steve Sweeney Bridge Claim Debunked: What He Didn’t Tell You

On March 19, 2026, journalist Steve Sweeney’s X post went viral, asserting Israel attempted his assassination in a “targeted airstrike” on a Lebanese bridge. He claimed “no warnings” were issued, framing the military operation as “ethnic cleansing” and an effort to “silence journalists.” The dramatic account swiftly garnered tens of thousands of shares, prompting condemnation from the Russian Foreign Ministry and calls for investigation from groups like the Committee to Protect Journalists, painting a vivid narrative of deliberate press persecution.

However, the factual record contradicts Sweeney’s claims significantly. The Qasmiya Bridge, where Sweeney reported, is a strategically vital crossing and a recurring military target, identified by the IDF as a Hezbollah conduit for weapons. Hezbollah “martyrs” billboards clearly visible at the site further underscore its operational relevance to the group. Crucially, IDF spokesperson Avichay Adraee issued multiple, widely disseminated Arabic-language warnings on X on March 18 and 19, specifically cautioning residents south of the Zahrani River about imminent strikes on Litani River crossings. These alerts were broadcast by major regional media, yet Sweeney claimed ignorance.

Adding to the inconsistencies, Sweeney himself shared news on his X account the day prior to the incident, stating, “Israel says it is bombing bridges to disrupt Hezbollah supply lines,” directly undermining his later assertion of being unwarned. His affiliation with RT, a Kremlin-funded state media outlet banned in the EU for misinformation, and his prior flagging by UK counter-terrorism police, raise questions about his reporting’s impartiality. Furthermore, if Israel intended a targeted assassination, their precision munitions could have hit within meters, suggesting the strike targeted the bridge infrastructure, not the individual.

The evidence overwhelmingly indicates that Sweeney’s narrative of a deliberate assassination attempt is unfounded. The Qasmiya Bridge was a publicly declared military target in an active strike zone, with numerous warnings openly broadcast and even acknowledged by Sweeney himself. While Sweeney and his cameraman sustained injuries, the documented facts confirm the IDF’s objective was the strategic bridge, used by Hezbollah for military purposes, not the journalist. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for rigorous fact-checking when engaging with viral, emotionally charged narratives.
