Amorim blasts ‘too comfortable’ Manchester United after chaotic draw with Spurs

Ruben Amorim criticised his Manchester United players for becoming “too comfortable” after they threw away a lead in a 3-3 draw against Tottenham Hotspur.

United looked in control for much of the match, leading through Bryan Mbeumo’s first-half goal, but a lack of intensity allowed Spurs back into the contest. Mathys Tel and Richarlison turned the game on its head before Matthijs de Ligt salvaged a point with a 96th-minute header, extending United’s unbeaten run to five games.

Despite the late equaliser, Amorim was far from satisfied. “We were comfortable in the game but I think we should do better, be more aggressive,” he said. “The three points were there, the space was there. We need to expect that one play can change everything, and today it did. We need to do better because the game was there to take.”

There was also concern for substitute Benjamin Sesko, who appeared to pick up a knee injury. “We think he has a problem but let’s see,” Amorim added.

Tottenham boss Thomas Frank, meanwhile, defended his substitutions after fans booed the decision to replace Xavi Simons with Tel, who equalised minutes later. “Sometimes you’re lucky,” Frank said. “But every time I make a change, it’s to try to win the game — and [Tel] did well.”

Despite Spurs’ continued struggles at home — they haven’t won there since August — Frank said the performance showed progress: “We turned it around, we stayed in the game, and we were so close to winning it. Overall it was a good performance against a good Manchester United team that’s definitely in flow.”
