The investigation into the death of Tasia Fortune reached a major milestone on Friday after police in Jackson, Mississippi, arrested a man and charged him with murder. The arrest came one day after the state medical examiner officially ruled Fortune’s death a homicide.
Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney announced the arrest during a news conference. She said officers took 51-year-old Jarques Ratliff into custody after spotting him walking on a city street. Authorities had already secured search and arrest warrants before the medical examiner completed the final determination regarding Fortune’s death.
According to Brackney, the homicide ruling issued on Thursday evening allowed investigators to move ahead with the warrants and make the arrest.
Ratliff now faces a murder charge. Police have not released detailed information about the evidence that led to his arrest. Investigators also have not disclosed a possible motive.
Brackney confirmed that Ratliff and Fortune knew each other in some capacity. However, she declined to provide further information about the nature of their connection because the investigation remains active.
“This case remains active and additional arrests will be pending,” Brackney said.
The police chief explained that detectives spent weeks examining evidence and following leads. Investigators interviewed nearly 15 people and gathered forensic evidence while working to determine what happened to Fortune.
Brackney described the arrest as an important step in the case but emphasized that detectives are still seeking answers.
“The warrants executed today and the arrest of Mr. Ratliff are significant steps, but there is still an ongoing investigation,” she said.
The news brought an emotional response from Fortune’s family. Her mother, Christy Spivey, said she was overwhelmed when police informed her that a suspect had been arrested.
Spivey said she immediately began crying and thanked investigators for their efforts. The arrest provided some relief for a family that has spent weeks searching for answers.
Even so, many questions remain.
Spivey said investigators did not tell her whether DNA evidence played a role in identifying the suspect. She also said police did not explain what they believe motivated the crime.
The victim’s mother said she did not know Ratliff personally. After hearing his name, she began contacting some of Fortune’s friends to learn whether they knew him.
The family remains shocked by the case and is still trying to understand what happened.
“We still don’t have a lot of answers,” Spivey said.
Fortune, 29, was found dead on Aug. 3. Police discovered her body hanging from a tree in the backyard of an abandoned property in Jackson. The circumstances surrounding her death quickly drew public attention and sparked calls for a thorough investigation.
For weeks, authorities worked to determine whether the death resulted from foul play. The medical examiner’s decision to classify the case as a homicide provided a key breakthrough and allowed investigators to move forward with criminal charges.
Officials have not released details about how Fortune died or whether additional suspects may be involved. However, Brackney indicated that more arrests remain possible as the investigation continues.
The case has attracted additional attention because it follows other high-profile hanging deaths in Mississippi during the past year.
One of those cases involved Trey Reed, a 21-year-old Black student at Delta State University. Authorities concluded Reed died by suicide after an investigation and autopsy. Officials said there was no evidence of foul play.
However, Reed’s family questioned those findings. They requested an independent autopsy and called for the release of surveillance footage connected to the case.
Another case involved Cory Zukatis, an unhoused White man in his 30s who was found dead in Vicksburg. The Mississippi State Medical Examiner ruled that death a suicide.
Unlike those cases, investigators now say evidence in Fortune’s death supports a homicide finding. The arrest of Ratliff marks the first major criminal charge in the investigation.
Police continue to review evidence, interview witnesses, and pursue additional leads. Authorities have asked anyone with information about Fortune’s death to contact investigators as they work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the case and whether others may be held responsible.
