Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner has suspended his campaign in Maine following sexual assault allegations that prompted growing pressure from party leaders and supporters. Platner announced the decision in a video posted on social media, saying he was stepping aside even though he denied all of the claims against him.
In the video, Platner said the allegations were false and insisted the reported events never happened. He also claimed that powerful political forces and media organizations were working against his campaign. Despite maintaining his innocence, he said the campaign could no longer continue under the current circumstances.
Platner said suspending the campaign would allow the broader political movement he supported to move forward without being centered on him. He added that the campaign was ending its operations but continued to reject the accusations.
The latest allegations became public earlier this week after a woman who previously dated Platner accused him of sexually assaulting her in late 2021. She alleged that he entered her home without permission and forced sexual contact despite her objections. According to her account, she ended communication with him after the incident.
Platner responded shortly after the allegations were published. He denied any non-consensual behavior and said the claims were completely untrue. He also acknowledged that the accusations had created serious political challenges for his campaign.
The allegations quickly led to calls from senior Democratic leaders for Platner to withdraw from the race. Party officials argued that continuing his candidacy could damage Democratic efforts in one of the country’s closely watched Senate contests.
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee also announced that it would not provide financial support to the campaign if Platner remained the party’s nominee. The decision increased pressure on him as questions continued to grow.
Before the latest controversy, Platner had built a strong campaign based on a populist message and support from progressive voters. He raised millions of dollars, attracted large crowds at campaign events, and won endorsements from several well-known Democratic lawmakers.
However, his campaign also faced earlier controversies. Reports highlighted past social media posts containing offensive language, while questions were also raised about his personal relationships and a tattoo that critics said resembled a Nazi symbol. Platner previously apologized for some of the online posts and denied wrongdoing regarding other allegations.
Additional reports later described claims of abusive behavior in previous relationships. Platner denied those accusations as well, calling them politically motivated.
After the newest allegations became public, several prominent Democratic leaders withdrew their endorsements. Their decisions reflected growing concern about the campaign’s future and its impact on the party’s chances in the election.
The Maine Senate race is considered important because Democrats hope to gain the seat currently held by Republican Senator Susan Collins, who is seeking another term in office. Party leaders now face a limited period to choose a replacement candidate before the general election.
Under Maine election law, Democrats have until late July to nominate a new Senate candidate. The state Democratic Party has already announced plans to hold a nominating convention to select a replacement.
Several Democrats have expressed interest in entering the race. Potential candidates include former elected officials, business leaders, and other public figures who could compete for the nomination.
Party officials said they remain confident that Democratic voters are highly motivated ahead of the election. They expressed hope that supporters who had joined Platner’s campaign would continue backing the party’s new nominee once selected.
Republican leaders responded by criticizing Democrats over Platner’s candidacy and the controversy surrounding his campaign. They argued that the situation reflected poor judgment by party leaders.
No criminal charges related to the recent allegations were announced at the time of Platner’s campaign suspension. Platner continues to deny all accusations against him.
With the campaign now suspended, attention has shifted to the Democratic Party’s process for selecting a new nominee. The outcome will shape one of the most closely watched Senate races ahead of the November election.
