The White House unveiled a media “Hall of Shame” on its official website as Trump increased attacks on so-called fake news. The site provides sortable, regularly updated records, preventing alleged hoaxes, anonymous claims, or partisan smears from being forgotten.
Major Outlets and Detailed Accusations
The portal names The Washington Post as “Offender of the Week” and criticizes The New York Times, CNN, CBS News, and The Independent. It lists Associated Press and Reuters, accusing one of bias and omission, the other of lying. The site categorizes claims under circular reporting, failure to report, false claims, malpractice, mischaracterisation, misrepresentation, and left-wing lunacy. Post executive editor Matt Murray condemned the targeting as intentional and unconstitutional, asserting the newspaper will continue reporting rigorously for all Americans.
Threats to Press Freedom
The portal excluded conservative outlets from criticism. The Media Research Centre praised the site as a stronger effort than previous Republican presidents. Experts told DW that such rhetoric threatens journalists and endangers press freedom and democracy. The launch coincided with Trump intensifying attacks on reporters, often women, calling them “ugly inside and out,” “stupid,” and “piggy.”
