A church event in Virginia turned tragic on Friday evening when a large tent collapsed during severe weather, killing one person and injuring dozens of attendees. The incident happened in Moneta, Bedford County, as strong winds swept through the area during a storm.

The collapse took place around 6:45 p.m. at EastLake Community Church while families were gathered for an outdoor community celebration. Officials said the commercial tent, which had a seating capacity of about 1,500 people, came down suddenly as evacuation efforts were just beginning.

Bedford County acting fire and rescue Chief Abbey Johnston said the pastor had started to move people out of the tent when the structure collapsed. She described the situation as extremely fast and said strong winds are believed to be the main cause of the failure.

Authorities confirmed that one person was killed in the collapse. In addition, 11 people were taken to hospitals for treatment, while another 11 were treated at the scene and later released, bringing the total number of injured to 22.

The incident occurred during a severe thunderstorm watch that covered most of Virginia, including the Moneta area, until 9 p.m. Friday. Officials believe the sudden burst of high winds from the storm system triggered the collapse.

Chief Johnston said the tent was properly secured before the event began. Emergency responders from multiple agencies were already nearby and quickly arrived to help rescue attendees and provide medical assistance.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene as people rushed to find family members and help those trapped or injured. First responders worked quickly to account for everyone and secure the area as conditions remained dangerous.

The church gathering was part of a “multiply week” celebration designed to bring the community together. The event included food, worship activities, children’s games, and ice cream, all held under the large outdoor tent.

Moneta is a small rural community with around 450 residents, located about 18 miles east of Roanoke. The close-knit town has been deeply affected by the sudden loss and injuries.

Pastor Troy Keaton shared a message on social media calling the incident a “great tragedy.” He said the collapse happened just as he was preparing to release attendees when a sudden gust of wind struck the tent.

He added that the church is now focused on caring for the injured and supporting affected families through prayers and assistance.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the victim or updated conditions of those hospitalized. Investigations are continuing as officials review weather data and structural safety conditions of the tent.

The tragedy has raised renewed concerns about outdoor event safety during severe weather, especially when large temporary structures are used for public gatherings.
