President Donald Trump has put his plans to reshape Washington, DC, at the centre of a speech delivered just before the US midterm elections. On Monday, he praised the repair of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, showed images of the work and celebrated new changes at the White House.
Trump described the restored pool as more beautiful than ever. He also spoke about past damage to the site and repeated claims of vandalism, despite the fact that a related legal case had already been dropped.
“The pool is now better and more beautiful than it’s ever been before, and we’re very proud of it,” Trump said.
He added that the repair work had faced problems involving vandalism. However, the Justice Department had already ended its case against former Olympic athlete David Hearn, who had been accused of damaging the pool.
A judge later dismissed the case after prosecutors accepted that faulty installation work had caused the damage. This weakened the claim that vandalism was responsible for the problem.
Trump also made a surprising comment about the site’s name. He said his administration was giving serious thought to renaming the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool the Trump Reflecting Pool. He later said the remark was a joke.
During his speech, Trump held up printed pictures of pipes, joints and other materials used in the pool project. He also displayed an image that appeared to show the number “8647” sprayed onto the base of the drained pool.
The president claimed the marking was connected to a phrase used by former FBI Director James Comey. Comey has become one of Trump’s major political and personal opponents since leaving the federal government.
Trump’s remarks were part of a wider effort to highlight his plans for the nation’s capital. His administration has focused on several construction and repair projects around Washington and the White House.
He praised the newly installed helipad at the White House and discussed work to restore the lawn after a UFC event held on the grounds. Scotts Miracle-Gro took part in the lawn restoration work.
The president also spoke about his planned triumphal arch and a new White House ballroom. Both projects have drawn public attention and criticism.
Some Americans have questioned the need for these changes. Polls have shown that several of Trump’s major plans for Washington have received negative public reactions.
Trump defended his work on the reflecting pool by saying the project should bring people together. He described the reopened site as something that should unite Americans rather than create political divisions.
The pool had remained empty for an extended period earlier in the year because of repair work. Its reopening has now become an important part of Trump’s efforts to show progress on his plans for the capital.
However, the speech was not limited to construction projects. Trump also turned to familiar political issues as he made his final appeal to voters before the midterm elections.
He praised his immigration policies and discussed the war with Iran. He also launched strong attacks on Democrats, accusing them of being hostile to the country.
Trump described the election as one of the most important midterm contests in American history. He claimed that the Democratic Party had selected an extreme group of candidates.
“This is the last day before the midterm elections, the most important midterm I believe in our lifetime,” he said.
He also repeated his proposal to distribute $5,000 checks if Republicans won the elections. The promise was part of his effort to gain support ahead of the vote.
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum also attended the event and delivered remarks. After inviting Burgum to speak, Trump returned to his plans for changing Washington.
He promoted the proposed triumphal arch and explained plans for a promenade linking the Lincoln Memorial to the Potomac River. He also mentioned a planned renovation of his golf course.
The golf course project has attracted attention because of ongoing legal and public questions surrounding the administration’s development plans.
Trump said there were many more plans for Washington but suggested that he did not have enough time to discuss them all.
He ended the speech by praising what he called a golden age for America. He said foreign leaders who once laughed at the country no longer viewed it in the same way.
The speech highlighted how Trump’s plans for Washington have become a major part of his political message. He used the event to defend his projects, promote future developments and attack his political rivals.
With the midterm elections approaching, the president sought to present his work as evidence of progress. However, debate over his renovation plans, public spending and changes to national landmarks is likely to continue after voters make their choice.
