OpenAI is offering a $555,000 salary to recruit a new head of preparedness.
The role involves guarding against risks from increasingly powerful artificial intelligence systems.
The post was announced by Sam Altman, who warned the job would be immediately demanding.
Responsibilities include addressing threats to mental health, cybersecurity and biological safety.
The role also covers preparing for future “frontier” AI capabilities that could cause severe harm.
Altman said the challenges have little precedent and require new ways of measuring risk.
Concerns inside the industry are growing.
Mustafa Suleyman said those not afraid of current AI progress are “not paying attention”.
Google DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis has warned of systems going “off the rails”.
Meanwhile, regulation remains limited, leaving companies to police themselves.
The role includes equity in OpenAI, recently valued at about $500bn.
The company faces lawsuits linked to alleged harmful chatbot interactions and acknowledges safety improvements are ongoing.
