Germany’s small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are showing renewed optimism, with business sentiment turning positive for the first time since 2022. A recent survey by Creditreform found that the morale index for the “Mittelstand” rose to 0.1 in 2025, up from -4.8 in 2024.

Experts say this shift indicates a cautious but growing confidence among Germany’s small firms. SMEs, which form the backbone of the German economy, have faced challenges in recent years, including supply chain disruptions, inflationary pressures, and global economic uncertainty.

The survey highlights that firms are gradually regaining confidence in their business outlook. Improved economic conditions, stabilizing costs, and easing market pressures are helping business owners feel more optimistic about the year ahead.

Germany’s SMEs are central to the national economy, accounting for a significant share of employment and industrial output. Their sentiment often reflects broader economic trends, making this positive shift an important indicator for policymakers and investors.

Business leaders report that improved access to credit, government support programs, and stable demand in domestic and international markets are contributing to the rise in confidence. Many SMEs are planning moderate investments and expansion projects, signaling a cautious but positive outlook.

Analysts note that while optimism has returned, SMEs remain vigilant. External risks such as energy price fluctuations, geopolitical tensions, and potential economic slowdowns could still affect business sentiment. Nevertheless, the upward trend marks a recovery from previous years of uncertainty.

The survey also shows sectoral differences in sentiment. Technology, manufacturing, and service-based SMEs reported the strongest improvements, while smaller firms in energy-intensive industries remain cautious due to ongoing cost pressures.

Creditreform’s report underscores the resilience of Germany’s Mittelstand. Despite facing economic headwinds, these firms are adapting strategies, improving efficiency, and focusing on innovation to maintain competitiveness.

Economists highlight that positive SME sentiment can have broader effects on the economy. Increased confidence may lead to higher investment, more hiring, and stronger domestic demand, which in turn supports growth across various sectors.

The 2025 survey results suggest that Germany’s small firms are cautiously optimistic about the year ahead. Business owners are seeking growth opportunities while remaining mindful of potential risks, reflecting a balanced approach to economic recovery.

Overall, Germany’s small- and medium-sized enterprises are entering 2025 with improved morale. The first positive sentiment since 2022 signals a potential turning point, with optimism slowly returning to the heart of the German economy.
