Donald Trump has threatened to impose new 100% tariffs on Chinese goods from 1 November — or sooner — accusing Beijing of “very hostile” trade moves. The warning came after China tightened export controls on rare earth materials vital to US manufacturing, escalating economic tensions between the two nations. Posting on Truth Social, Trump said the tariffs would be “over and above” existing duties and part of “a massive increase” under consideration. “Perhaps the time has come,” he wrote, calling the move painful but ultimately “a good thing” for the US. The announcement rattled global markets. The S&P 500 fell…
Researchers say they’ve developed the first reliable blood test to detect myalgic encephalomyelitis, or chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). Currently, ME/CFS is diagnosed only through symptoms, often leaving patients undiagnosed or misdiagnosed for years. The University of East Anglia and Oxford Biodynamics discovered distinct DNA-folding patterns unique to people with ME/CFS. Testing on 47 patients and 61 healthy adults produced a 92% sensitivity rate and 98% specificity. “This could transform diagnosis and management,” said lead researcher Prof Dmitry Pshezhetskiy. The findings, published in the Journal of Translational Medicine, mark a major step toward earlier, more accurate detection. Experts, however, urge caution.…
A new study has revealed that about 90% of marine aquarium fish sold in the US are taken directly from the wild. Researchers found the trade’s supply chain remains largely hidden from consumers, with most fish caught in the Pacific and Indian oceans. Globally, around 55 million marine animals are sold each year in a US$2.15bn industry, with the US making up two-thirds of demand. Dr Bing Lin from the University of Sydney said the trade is “opaque from reef to retail,” leaving buyers unaware of origins. The study identified 45 species listed as threatened, including Banggai cardinalfish and clarion…
Jaguar Land Rover has begun a gradual restart of its UK factories, more than a month after a major cyber-attack halted production. The hack, which struck on 31 August, forced the company to suspend operations and disrupted global sales and supply chains. JLR reported a 17% drop in retail sales and a 24% fall in wholesale deliveries for the last quarter. “Tomorrow marks an important moment,” said CEO Adrian Mardell. “Our recovery is firmly under way.” Production is resuming at sites in Wolverhampton, Solihull, Hams Hall, Halewood, and Slovakia’s Nitra plant. To ease pressure on suppliers, JLR launched a new…
European nations are exploring the use of advanced drone systems to secure their eastern borders against potential threats from Russia. The proposed “drone wall” would rely on cutting-edge surveillance technology to monitor movement, detect incursions, and provide real-time intelligence to border authorities. Officials say the initiative aims to strengthen regional security as tensions with Russia continue to influence European defense strategies. The drones would act as an early warning system, allowing authorities to respond quickly to any suspicious activity or incursions along the eastern frontier. The system would integrate radar, sensors, and autonomous aerial drones capable of long-range monitoring. Experts…
Three scientists have won the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for revealing how the body stops the immune system from turning on itself. Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell, and Shimon Sakaguchi were recognized “for their discoveries concerning peripheral immune tolerance.” The Nobel assembly in Stockholm announced the award Monday, granting the trio 11 million Swedish kronor — about £871,400. Secretary-general Thomas Perlmann said only Sakaguchi answered his call. “The others probably have their phones on silent,” he joked. The discovery centers on T-cells — white blood cells that fight infections and cancer but can also trigger autoimmune diseases.…
While technology has long supported the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, the healthcare sector has recently adopted numerous digital platforms for comprehensive data analysis. These innovations now mark a major turning point in healthcare: the preventive, data-based approach not only transforms access to therapies but also places greater emphasis on prevention and patient empowerment. The American magazine TIME, in collaboration with Statista, has identified the world’s leading health-tech companies of 2025. Among the recognized innovators is Neko Health, a partner of the Swiss Health Alliance (SHA), honored as one of the most significant companies of its time. The analysis was…
George Russell said, “That’s how you do it.” He led every lap and won the Singapore Grand Prix for Mercedes.Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri fought behind him, their rivalry finally exploding. George Russell delivered a stunning lap to secure pole position for the Singapore Grand Prix, underlining his case for a Mercedes contract extension. The Briton beat Max Verstappen by almost two-tenths of a second on the Marina Bay street circuit, while Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris could manage only third and fifth for McLaren. Verstappen, however, left qualifying aggrieved, blaming Norris for ruining his final attempt. The Dutchman waved in frustration after losing downforce in the final corners behind Norris’s slow-moving McLaren on an in-lap. “You need every kind of clean air that you can have on a Q3 lap,”…
In Berlin’s city parks, northern goshawks soar above the trees, chasing crows and hunting pigeons with ease. Now, British conservationists hope to bring the same spectacle to urban England. Dr Paul O’Donoghue of Rewilding UK has unveiled plans to release 15 goshawks each into Chester and London, sourcing chicks from wild nests in Europe and UK breeders. The proposal, to be submitted soon to Natural England, aims to restore the apex predator to city environments where mid-sized birds such as crows and magpies have grown unchecked. “The goshawk is like a flying Batman bringing law and order to the city,”…
