Argentina survived one of the biggest scares of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after beating Cape Verde 3-2 in a dramatic extra-time victory. The defending champions had to battle until the closing minutes before booking their place in the next round. The match quickly became one of the best games of the tournament.

The Round of 32 clash took place in Miami and delivered excitement from start to finish. Argentina entered the match as clear favorites, but Cape Verde showed courage, skill, and determination. The small island nation pushed one of the world’s strongest football teams to the edge and nearly created one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history.

Argentina will now face Egypt in the next round. Cape Verde leaves the tournament with its reputation greatly enhanced after producing an outstanding performance against the defending champions.

Argentina controlled possession during the opening stages of the match. The team moved the ball well and created early chances. Cape Verde remained organized and relied on disciplined defending while looking for opportunities to counterattack.

The opening goal arrived in the 28th minute. Lionel Messi received a fine pass from Lisandro Martínez before showing brilliant control inside the penalty area. Messi then finished with power to give Argentina a 1-0 lead. The goal brought huge celebrations from thousands of Argentina supporters inside the stadium.

Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha continued his impressive tournament with several excellent saves. The experienced 40-year-old denied Argentina on multiple occasions and helped keep his team within reach of the match.

Cape Verde returned after halftime with much greater confidence. The players pressed higher up the field and challenged Argentina in midfield. Their effort was rewarded in the 59th minute when Ryan Mendes set up Deroy Duarte. Duarte struck a powerful low shot into the far corner to level the score at 1-1.

The equalizer changed the mood of the match. Argentina attacked with greater urgency, but Cape Verde defended with confidence and continued to threaten on the break. The underdogs refused to be intimidated and matched Argentina with energy and belief.

Neither side found another goal before the end of normal time, sending the contest into extra time.

Argentina regained the lead only minutes into the extra period. Lisandro Martínez collected the ball near the edge of the box and fired a powerful shot into the roof of the net to make it 2-1. Many believed that goal had secured Argentina’s place in the next round.

Cape Verde responded once again in remarkable fashion. Sidny Lopes Cabral picked up the ball on the left side before cutting inside and curling a superb shot into the far corner. His stunning finish made it 2-2 and sparked emotional celebrations among the Cape Verde players and supporters. It was one of the finest goals of the tournament and kept the dream alive.

Argentina continued to press forward in search of a winner. With just minutes remaining in extra time, Messi delivered a dangerous corner into the penalty area. Cristian Romero won the aerial challenge, and the ball deflected off defender Diney Borges before crossing the goal line. The goal gave Argentina a 3-2 advantage.

Cape Verde refused to give up even after conceding again. The team created late chances and almost forced another equalizer. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez made two vital saves during the closing moments to protect Argentina’s narrow lead.

When the final whistle sounded, Argentina celebrated advancing to the next round. Cape Verde players left the field disappointed but received warm applause for their fearless performance. Their effort earned respect from fans and football experts around the world.

Cape Verde has a population of about 600,000 people and is one of the smallest nations to compete at this level. Many members of the squad were born or developed their football careers outside the country before representing their national team. Throughout the tournament, they displayed discipline, teamwork, and resilience.

Although Argentina kept its hopes of defending the World Cup alive, Cape Verde produced one of the most memorable performances of the competition. The match will be remembered as a thrilling contest that showcased the beauty of football, where determination and belief allowed a small nation to challenge one of the sport’s greatest powers until the very end.
