The White House will hold a high-level meeting to review security plans after a recent shooting incident in Washington, D.C. White House chief of staff Susie Wiles will meet law enforcement and the Department of Homeland Security this week. The goal is to review safety rules for major events involving President Donald Trump. The meeting comes after an attack at a hotel during a major political dinner. Officials say Trump and senior leaders were likely targets. The White House says it still supports Secret Service leadership and its response. The review will focus on safety steps and event planning for future public appearances.

It follows a shooting outside the Washington Hilton during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. The event brought together journalists and senior officials. The attack forced security teams to act quickly. Several officials were moved to safety. The suspect was later identified as Cole Allen a 31-year-old from California. He is now facing federal charges. Officials say the case is still under investigation. They expect more charges in the coming days. Law enforcement agencies are now reviewing security steps used at the event.

Officials say this is the third major security incident involving Trump in less than two years. In July 2024 a sniper round grazed him during a rally in Pennsylvania. Later an armed man was found near a Florida golf course where Trump was present. Since then security has been increased. Bulletproof glass is now used at many outdoor events. The White House says these steps are meant to protect the president during public appearances. Officials say the latest incident shows why strong protection is still needed.

In court filings officials said Allen planned the trip in advance. He booked a hotel room in Washington weeks before the event. He traveled from California by train. Investigators say he carried weapons and tried to enter a secured area. He also left a message for family members describing violent intent. Prosecutors are treating it as an attempted assassination case. They say the suspect may have targeted multiple officials inside the venue. He was stopped by security before reaching the main ballroom area.

Security forces responded quickly and stopped the suspect before he could reach the protected area. A Secret Service agent was injured but protective gear reduced the impact. The agent later left hospital care. FBI Director Kash Patel praised the response teams for stopping a larger threat. Officials say the event shows the importance of fast coordination between agencies. The suspect was taken into custody and later appeared in federal court. He has not yet entered a plea.

The White House says the review meeting will also prepare for upcoming national events. These include major celebrations and international gatherings. Officials say security will be a top focus. President Trump said the incident was difficult for the First Lady. He also said security teams did a good job. He thanked law enforcement for their response. Trump added that public life carries risks but events will continue as planned. The administration says it remains confident in current security leadership.

Officials say the White House security review will continue through the week. The goal is to improve safety planning for all high profile events. Law enforcement agencies will study what worked and what needs change. They will also update response plans for large gatherings in Washington and other cities. The investigation into the attack is still active. Authorities are collecting evidence from multiple states. They are also reviewing digital records and travel data linked to the suspect. Security experts say this case will likely shape future protection rules for political leaders. The Secret Service is expected to adjust procedures where needed. Officials stress that public safety remains the top priority. They say lessons from this incident will be used to strengthen future operations. The White House also says coordination between agencies will be improved to reduce risks during major events.
