US Navy Intercepts Another Venezuelan Oil Tanker

The United States has seized another oil tanker as it ramps up enforcement of sanctions on Venezuela, marking the fifth vessel intercepted in recent weeks amid heightened naval activity in the Caribbean.

    Ghost Fleet Targeted

US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said the tanker, Olina, belonged to a “ghost” fleet — ships accused of hiding their identities while carrying embargoed oil. The vessel attempted to leave Venezuela undetected but was intercepted by US forces. Noem emphasized that such ships “will not outrun justice,” with the Coast Guard carrying out the seizure.

    Joint Military Operation

US Southern Command reported that the pre-dawn operation involved Marines and Navy personnel deploying from the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford, the world’s largest. Video released by SOUTHCOM showed forces rappelling from helicopters and taking control of the tanker, highlighting the precision of the coordinated effort.

    Trump Signals Extended Oversight

President Donald Trump had previously ordered a blockade on sanctioned oil vessels heading to and from Venezuela. One of the seized ships included a Russia-linked tanker, an operation condemned by Moscow, according to Reuters. Trump indicated in a recent interview that US oversight of Venezuela’s oil could continue “much longer,” signaling ongoing pressure on the South American country.
