Real Sociedad snatched a dramatic 3–2 victory over Athletic Club in a Basque derby that had everything — rain, chaos, and a last-gasp winner from local hero Jon Gorrotxategi.
The 22-year-old academy graduate, playing his first derby, scored in the 92nd minute to seal an emotional victory in San Sebastián. His first effort was scuffed, but he pounced on the rebound to smash the ball home from close range, sparking wild celebrations in the Reale Arena.
Earlier, Brais Méndez had opened the scoring after an extraordinary moment from Ander Barrenetxea, who set up the goal seconds after returning to the pitch injured. Gorka Guruzeta equalized for Athletic before Gonçalo Guedes restored La Real’s lead early in the second half. Athletic struck back again through Robert Navarro, a former Sociedad player, setting the stage for Gorrotxategi’s decisive strike.
The victory was more than just local bragging rights — it relieved pressure on new coach Sergio Francisco after a poor run of form. “I hit it with all my soul,” Gorrotxategi said afterward. “The feeling is incredible — this goal is for the fans.”
As the final whistle blew, the players joined supporters in song, celebrating a derby that embodied Basque passion and reaffirmed that, for now, Real Sociedad are alive and fighting again.
