North Korea has carried out new test-flights of hypersonic missiles under the supervision of leader Kim Jong-un, signaling a renewed emphasis on strengthening the country’s nuclear deterrent ahead of its major political gathering, the Workers’ Party congress.
The announcement came a day after South Korea and neighboring countries reported detecting multiple ballistic missile launches, which they described as provocative. The launches coincided with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung’s departure for China to meet President Xi Jinping.
Kim Stresses Military Readiness
According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Sunday’s drill tested a hypersonic weapon system to evaluate combat readiness, improve the operational skills of missile units, and assess North Korea’s overall war deterrent.
“Through today’s launching drill, we can confirm that a very important technology task for national defence has been carried out,” Kim said. He added that the country must continue modernizing its military, with a focus on offensive weapon systems.
A fully operational hypersonic missile would allow North Korea to bypass missile defense systems in the United States and South Korea. While Pyongyang has conducted multiple tests in recent years, many experts remain skeptical about whether the missiles have consistently achieved the speed and maneuverability required to be considered true hypersonic weapons.
Recent Missile Activity Highlights Military Ambitions
In recent weeks, North Korea has also test-fired what it described as long-range strategic cruise missiles and new anti-air systems, while releasing images showing progress on its first nuclear-powered submarine.
Observers say the weapons demonstrations are intended to showcase military achievements ahead of the Workers’ Party congress, the first of its kind in five years. Analysts are watching closely to see whether Kim will use the event to outline a new approach toward the United States or revive stalled denuclearization talks.
Regional Tensions and Global Implications
The missile launches followed a high-profile U.S. military operation that removed Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and brought him to the United States on narco-terrorism conspiracy charges. North Korea condemned the operation, calling it proof of the “rogue and brutal nature of the U.S.”
Experts suggest that such developments reinforce Kim’s determination to expand North Korea’s nuclear arsenal, which he sees as essential for the survival of his government and protection of national sovereignty. During the drill, Kim defended his nuclear program, stating that recent geopolitical crises and complex international events demonstrate why a stronger deterrent is necessary.
