Eyewitnesses reported seeing Charlie Kirk take a bullet to the neck before aides rushed him off stage for treatment.
US President Donald Trump confirmed Kirk’s death later on Wednesday, calling him “great, and even legendary” on Truth Social.
Trump said Kirk understood American youth better than anyone and expressed condolences to his wife Erika and their family.
Aubrey Laitsch, public relations manager for Turning Point USA, initially confirmed Kirk was in critical condition and urged supporters to pray.
Shooting Occurs During Campus Debate
Kirk spoke under a tent at Utah Valley University with banners reading “The American Comeback” and “Prove Me Wrong.”
A single shot rang out after Kirk answered an audience question. Blood gushed from the left side of his neck.
Campus security and local police immediately took a suspect into custody, though authorities later released the individual.
Law enforcement launched a full investigation, and the FBI dispatched agents to lead efforts at the scene.
The debate sparked controversy on campus. An online petition asking university administrators to block Kirk’s appearance gathered nearly 1,000 signatures.
The university cited First Amendment rights and affirmed its commitment to free speech, intellectual inquiry, and constructive dialogue.
Political and Public Reactions
Trump, along with Republican and Democratic leaders, condemned the shooting and offered prayers for Kirk’s recovery before his death.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox promised justice for Kirk and confirmed he spoke directly with Trump after the incident.
Senator Mike Lee called Kirk an “American patriot” and emphasized that violence would not triumph.
Left-wing influencer Hasan Piker, scheduled to debate Kirk later this month, described the attack as “terrifying” and warned of potential threats to others.
Piker noted that acts of vengeance following the shooting could endanger additional individuals in public life.
Kirk’s Legacy in Conservative Activism
Kirk co-founded Turning Point USA in 2012 with William Montgomery to advocate for limited government and lower taxes on university campuses.
Though the group started small, it grew to reach hundreds of thousands of students nationwide over the years.
Kirk gained recognition for challenging liberal perspectives in academia, attracting support from influential conservative financiers.
Turning Point supported Donald Trump after he secured the GOP nomination in 2016. Kirk worked as a personal aide to Donald Trump Jr. during the general election campaign.
He frequently appeared on cable television, championing conservative causes and participating in the so-called “culture wars.”
Trump and his son often spoke at Turning Point conferences, recognizing Kirk’s impact and consistent support for their political agendas.
Kirk’s influence extended beyond media appearances, shaping conservative youth engagement and leaving a lasting mark on political activism in the United States.
