    Canada says TikTok fails to protect children’s privacy

    Canadian privacy officials concluded that TikTok does not adequately safeguard children’s personal data. They said the platform allows underage access and misuses sensitive information.

    Children continue using the platform

    Hundreds of thousands of Canadian children access TikTok each year. The company maintains the service is not for users under 13. Investigators confirmed that many minors still use the app.

    Sensitive data used for advertising

    The inquiry revealed that TikTok collected personal information from large numbers of children. The platform then used this data to target ads and tailor content. Officials warned these practices could harm young users.

    Company pledges stronger safeguards

    TikTok announced plans to improve protections for Canadian users. It disputed some findings but did not clarify which conclusions it contests.

    Commissioner raises alarms

    Privacy commissioner Philippe Dufresne led the investigation with other officials. He said TikTok gathers vast amounts of data, including from minors. He warned that targeted content and advertising could negatively affect children.

    Mr Dufresne confirmed TikTok agreed to enhance measures against underage access. The company also pledged to clarify how it manages children’s personal data.

    TikTok responds

    A spokesperson said the platform welcomed the investigation. They highlighted that Canadian officials accepted several proposals to strengthen protections. The spokesperson added that TikTok remains committed to transparency and privacy despite disputing parts of the report.

    Global scrutiny intensifies

    The Canadian findings add to worldwide attention on TikTok. Governments are examining its effect on children and raising national security concerns. The Chinese-owned company and Beijing deny all allegations.

    In the United States, former President Donald Trump discussed TikTok with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Talks included a potential takeover of TikTok’s US operations by American companies.

    In Europe, the European Commission ordered staff in 2023 to remove TikTok from corporate phones and devices. Officials said the step aimed to protect data and boost cybersecurity.
