President Donald Trump is considering removing US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle after reports of alleged misconduct in Athens. Guilfoyle has denied any wrongdoing, and her lawyers say the claims against her are false.
Trump spoke about the matter at the White House. Asked whether he was thinking about dismissing Guilfoyle, he said his team was reviewing the case and that officials were unhappy.
Guilfoyle is the former fiancée of Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr. Her role as ambassador has come under fresh scrutiny after reports raised questions about her dealings with a major Trump donor.
The reports claim Guilfoyle asked the donor to pay a large credit card bill in return for access to the Trump administration. Her lawyers reject that account. They say the money was owed for speeches and consulting work she had done for the donor before taking the ambassador post.
Guilfoyle, 57, was appointed as the US envoy to Greece in December 2024. The appointment came about a month before Trump returned to the White House for his second term.
At the time, Trump praised her background in law, media and politics. He said her leadership and knowledge made her well suited to represent the United States abroad.
A series of text messages reviewed by reporters appears to show Guilfoyle asking Eric Deters, a longtime Trump ally, to send her money. The messages were first reported by a US newspaper.
In one message sent through the Signal app, Guilfoyle appeared to ask Deters to transfer money to American Express. Another message, dated shortly before her Senate confirmation hearing in July, asked him to complete the payment that day.
Deters did not send the money, according to the report. Guilfoyle’s lawyers have challenged the authenticity of the messages and deny that they show improper conduct.
In a statement issued on October 12, her legal team said Deters owed her about $150,000. They said the amount covered speaking events and consulting work she had completed long before she became ambassador.
The lawyers argued that asking a client to pay for completed work was not corruption. They said the dispute was about money owed for services, not an effort to trade political access for payment.
Other claims have also added to the pressure on Guilfoyle. Reported audio recordings appear to include her discussing links to wealthy Greek business figures. She reportedly said these contacts helped pay for luxury trips and private jet flights.
The same report said Guilfoyle had told an official in Athens that the United States could bring down the Greek government. The claims have raised questions about her conduct and her approach to diplomatic work.
Democrats on the Senate and House foreign affairs committees have called on the State Department to investigate her actions in Greece. They want officials to review the claims and determine whether her conduct broke any rules.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio has also been reported to be unhappy with Guilfoyle following the allegations. Rubio was photographed with her during a visit to Athens last week. Neither the reported concerns nor the claims against Guilfoyle have been publicly confirmed as findings of misconduct.
Before entering politics, Guilfoyle worked as a prosecutor in San Francisco and Los Angeles. She joined Fox News in 2006 and became a familiar face on television.
She left the network in 2018 and joined Trump’s political campaign. That year, she began dating Donald Trump Jr. The pair later became engaged but reportedly separated in 2024, around the time she received the ambassador appointment.
Donald Trump Jr later married model and socialite Bettina Anderson in Florida, according to the report.
The allegations now place Guilfoyle’s diplomatic role under pressure as Trump considers her future. The White House has not announced a final decision on whether she will remain in Athens.
Her legal team continues to deny wrongdoing and says the payment dispute relates to work completed before her appointment. Any decision by the administration may depend on its review of the claims and the results of any official inquiry.
For now, the Kimberly Guilfoyle ambassador probe remains unresolved. The reported messages, audio recordings and calls for a State Department review have increased scrutiny of her conduct, while no public finding of misconduct has been announced.
